Contains over 1,000 drawings by Crane including drawings for book and magazine illustrations, over 70 sketchbooks, many from his travels in Europe and the United States; notebooks of watercolor drawings; proofs; and miscellaneous drawings including illustrations for unidentified publications, portraits, child studies, seals, and stained glass and costume designs. Also a few manuscripts by Crane including sonnets and his notes on artistic characteristics and his work in arts and letters.

Walter Crane was born in Liverpool on 15 Aug 1845, second son of the portrait painter Thomas Crane and his wife Marie née Kearsley. The family moved first to Torquay, and in 1857 to London. From 1859-62 Crane was apprenticed to the wood engraver William James Linton, although he studied painting at the same time.
